THE Hotel Association of the Northern Mariana Islands reported 39.1% average occupancy rate among 11 member hotels for December 2024, a 10% increase compared to a year ago in December 2024.
According to HANMI, hotels typically require around 70-80% hotel occupancy to stay in operation.
A total of 25,425 of 65,019 available room nights sold during December 2024 compared to 26,146 of 73,313 available rooms sold in December 2023. The average room rate was $126.00 compared to $144.73 last December.
“Although the occupancy rate percentage increased, the actual number of rooms sold was fewer and the average room price was lower compared to 2023, as Hyatt Regency Saipan is no longer included in our 2024 numbers,” said HANMI Chairman Dennis Seo. “In addition to the recent strength of the U.S. dollar, another factor is that the school winter break in Korea started in January this year instead of December, which has impacted the arrival of family tourists in December.”
For 2024 overall, HANMI members sold 309,012 of 807,034 available room nights.
“That means for every night a room was booked last year, it sat empty for the next two days,” said Seo. “The whole community is feeling the effect of not having a strong 3rd source market for visitors, and the forecast is not very positive due to several factors in our primary source market of Korea.”
Hotels included in HANMI’s monthly statistical report are Aqua Resort Club, Aquarius Beach Tower, Century Hotel, Coral Ocean Resort, Grandvrio Resort Saipan, Crowne Plaza Resort Saipan, Kensington Hotel Saipan, LaoLao Bay Golf & Resort, Pacific Islands Club Saipan, Saipan World Resort, and Surfrider Resort Hotel.
The Hotel Association of the Northern Mariana Islands was established in 1985 as a professional forum for the hospitality industry of the islands.
