SAIPAN Mayor RB Camacho of has called for urgent action regarding the ongoing issue of inter-island transportation between Rota, Tinian, and Saipan, emphasizing the critical need for a practical and equitable solution. This issue is of particular concern for CNMI residents who rely on Saipan’s healthcare facilities for medical treatments not available on their home islands, especially for dialysis patients.
“We are facing an urgent and growing challenge for residents of Rota and Tinian who need specialized care that is not currently available on their islands. The health centers in both Rota and Tinian lack sufficient healthcare equipment, particularly for dialysis treatments, forcing these individuals to travel to Saipan. However, the limitations in transportation options — including frequent delays, high costs, and limited capacity — are putting lives at risk and compromising the well-being of our citizens,” said Mayor Camacho.
He stressed the need for a reasonable and workable solution that ensures safe, timely, and affordable transportation options for these individuals. He acknowledged that the situation is especially dire for dialysis patients, who require frequent and scheduled treatments that cannot be postponed. Mayor RB emphasized that such a solution must be sustainable, with reliable scheduling and affordability as key factors to ensure no one is left behind in receiving the care they desperately need.
“We cannot allow our people to suffer or be placed in a situation where they cannot access the treatment they deserve. The health and well-being of our residents, especially those with chronic health conditions, should be our top priority. It is time for all stakeholders to come together and find a solution that works for everyone — a solution that balances healthcare needs with practical transportation logistics,” the mayor said.
He has expressed his commitment to working with all involved parties to ensure that healthcare access for all CNMI residents is not hindered by transportation barriers. The meeting will serve as the first step in formulating a clear and actionable plan that prioritizes the health and safety of the people of Rota, Tinian, and Saipan.
“We are all part of one community, and it is our responsibility to ensure that every individual, regardless of which island they call home, has access to the healthcare they need,” the mayor said.
