TIMOTHY “Tex” Brasuell recorded an impressive net 72 at the Coral Ocean Resort golf course on Saturday, Dec. 7 to become the Ye Olde Saipanne Golfe Clubbe’s 2024 “Champion Golfer of the Year.” T
ex’s calm demeanor kept his scores low while his trusted antique Luck 13 Sasquatch driver kept his balls in the fairway. But at the end of the day, it was Tex’s steady putting that won him the palm.
With other club members regularly three-jacking the unexpectedly difficult COP greens, Tex never took more than two putts per hole, often by sinking knee-knocking 5-7 footers. Tex’s putting prowess prompted the joint silver medalist and 2019 champion Juan “Juj” Lizama to lament: “We were putted to death.”
Tied at 74 for second with Juj was the 2021 champion Bill “Supersandy” Riggen. Rounding out the top five were the 2016 champion Mike “26” Deary with a 78 and last year’s champion Wil “Paki” Maui with a 79.
After the round, an awards ceremony was held at the club’s traditional venue of Wilde Bill’s Bar and Grille where Tex was presented with the perpetual Claret Jugge and fitted with the champion’s jacket by last year’s winner Paki.
Following the presentation, the Clubbe members enjoyed the delicious Thai food and malt beverages as provided by the Wilde Bill’s staff while simultaneously congratulating Tex and proclaiming that each of them would have won “but for those 3-6 putts that barely lipped out.”
