FLAMINGO Tavern and K-Pro were among the teams that emerged victorious on the first day of the 2nd Saipan Magalahi Eagles Club – Saipan MagaHaga Lady Eagles Group Basketball Tournament 2024 at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium on Sunday.
Flamingo Tavern bested Villaroyal Pawnshop, 71-67, while K-Pro outlasted the Compadres, 67-62.
Against Villaroyal, Flamingo’s in-and-out duo of Jhan Gatbonton and Jerome Reyes were at the frontline of the action. Gatbonton led the charge from around the perimeter, scoring nine points, while Reyes punished defenders from underneath the rim with seven points.
Villaroyal started slow but was kept afloat by Tiago, who scored eight straight points. However, their offense was riddled with turnovers and missed shots that handed Flamingo easy buckets on the other end.
Down 26-36 by the end of the first half, Villaroyal reassessed their strategy and adjusted accordingly during the second half.
With better defensive coverage, they reduced Flamingo’s productivity by half, and gradually turned the tides with offensive highlights led by Jomar Tengco with six straight points and Jham Viega, who connected two crucial triples to bring Villaroyal back in the game.
Undeterred, Flamingo’s Mark Aycardo struck back with three late-game triples to seal the deal, 71-67.
K-Pro vs Compadres
Joining the winner’s circle was K-Pro which defeated the Compadres, 67-62.
K-Pro lived by the three-point line with Jugos, Suba, and Lerio each contributing a pair of triples in the first half to give their team the lead, 35-28.
In the second half, the Compadres shut down K-Pro’s long-range threat while Movilla and Tabora thrived in the offensive transition to cut down K-Pro’s lead.
K-Pro, however, still excelled from close range with Suba, Fundador and Macaraig making their way to the basket to maintain the upper hand and clinch the win, 67-62.
