TINIAN — On Oct.19, 2024, the Tinian JROTC Stallion Battalion participated in the annual 5K Run, Walk, & Wheel, a community event dedicated to raising awareness about breast cancer and domestic violence. Organized by the Northern Marianas Coalition Against Domestic & Sexual Violence, the event took place at the Tinian Fiesta Grounds. The Stallion Battalion played a vital role by distributing water, cheering on participants, and helping with cleanup efforts.
The event kicked off early, starting at 5 a.m. and concluding around 7:40 a.m. Participants enjoyed a scenic route through San Jose Village, passing notable landmarks before returning to the Fiesta Grounds. This occasion provided an excellent service learning opportunity for the cadets, allowing them to actively engage with their community.
Following the run, attendees gathered at Jones Beach for a poignant flower release into the ocean, honoring victims of domestic violence. Prior to the race, Tinian’s Zumba group led warm-up stretches, with many cadets enthusiastically joining in. The event ended on a lively note as the Zumba group led another round of stretches, fostering camaraderie among all participants.
Capturing the day through photographs was a highlight for the cadets, who enjoyed documenting both the action and the vibrant atmosphere. Some memorable moments included participants playfully splashing in the shallow water while releasing flowers, bringing laughter to the meaningful tribute.
This year’s 5K attracted a large and enthusiastic crowd, energizing the event as runners navigated their checkpoints. The dedicated JROTC cadets provided crucial support, offering water and cheering participants across the finish line. The sight of runners in a sea of purple shirts created a strong sense of unity within the community, all gathered for a shared cause.
Feedback from participants and volunteers was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing enthusiasm about the day’s events. For several cadets, this was their first experience with the 5K, and they shared stories of enjoyment and camaraderie. C/CPL Ysabella Lenteja remarked, “As my first 5K, I really enjoyed it, especially the Zumba activities.” Special thanks went to the Zumba dancers for infusing the event with infectious energy.
Beyond the physical activities, the event held significant emotional weight, resonating deeply with everyone involved. C/SFC Timika Reyes emphasized its importance in honoring survivors of cancer and domestic violence. The gathering served as a heartfelt tribute, complemented by fun activities like the run and a raffle. C/PFC Ying Zhang was thrilled to win the raffle’s grand prize, a new FitBit, celebrating his accomplishments after completing the race.
Participants left feeling uplifted and connected, with C/1LT Serenity Guzman noting the strong sense of community that permeated the day. Many participants, including Aleckah Ayunon, enjoyed cheering on the runners as they approached the finish line, enhancing the spirited atmosphere.
Overall, the event was well-organized and fulfilling, with participants suggesting minor improvements for next year. C/CPL Jenard Nuyda highlighted the event’s role in raising awareness, recalling the impactful moment when flowers were released into the water. While suggestions included adding more water stations, the consensus remained that the event was rewarding and unifying. It successfully fostered a strong sense of community and support, leaving everyone excited for next year’s gathering.
