FORMER Department of Public Safety Commissioner Robert Alepuyo Guerrero, 60, passed away on Monday evening due to natural causes. He was survived by his wife Terry and their children.

In a statement, DPS expressed its “heartfelt condolences to the bereaved.”

Guerrero served as DPS chief from December 2015 to December 2022 under former Gov. Ralph DLG Torres.

In a statement on Wednesday, Torres said: “Upon learning of the passing of Mr. Robert Guerrero, I extended my condolences to his wife, Terry, and their children. His loss fills us with deep sadness.”

“Mr. Guerrero dedicated seven years to serving our Commonwealth and its citizens as the Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety,” Torres said. “He championed police officers’ benefits, salaries, and improved workplace conditions, uplifting those in the department and reinforcing the vital support needed for our frontline protectors.”

Torres said DPS “is one of the most challenging departments, and I was fortunate to have him lead during my time in office.”

“As we reflect on Mr. Guerrero’s significant contributions, we remember him not just as a commissioner but as a friend and a devoted public servant committed to making our Commonwealth a safer place for all,” Torres added.

A former Emergency Management Office director, Guerrero also served as Commonwealth Election Commission executive director and Department of Corrections commissioner.

Guerrero was named acting DPS commissioner in December 2015 and was officially appointed to the position in January 2016. He was confirmed by the Senate on April 10, 2016. He resigned on Dec. 16, 2022 following the election of the new governor, Arnold I. Palacios.
