FSM citizens mark their nation’s 38th Independence Day

MEMBERS of the Pohnpeian, Chuukese, Yapese, and Kosraen communities in the CNMI marked the 38th Independence Day of the Federated States of Micronesia at the Garapan Fishing Base on Monday.

The occasion marked the day in 1986 when the four island states became an independent island nation with a Compact of Free Association with the United States.

FSM Independence Day falls on Nov. 3, a Sunday, and so was celebrated on the 4th.

This year, Own Skichy Cholymay, president of the Chuukese Association, helped organized the event.

“We thank the people of the CNMI for their hospitality for hosting us for so many years, especially the local leaders. We’re thankful for that,” he added.

Various off-island dignitaries joined the celebration, including Andy Andrew, Kosrae Legislature floor leader; Danny Mersai, Chuuk Legislature speaker; and John Mafel of the Yap Legislature.

Representatives from the FSM Consulate on Guam were also present to accept passport applications from descendants of FSM citizens interested in applying for dual citizenship.

The day was marked by various cultural and contemporary performances.  Arthy Luckymis, a 17-year-old from Kosrae, was on hand to demonstrate taro pounding.

Former CNMI Rep. Sheila Babauta, who is Chamorro-Pohnpeian, was present to support the community and spread unity.

“I want to congratulate the FSM community and also encourage the FSM community to continue to pass down the knowledge of tradition and culture to our youth because that’s the way we can strengthen our roots,” she said. “We can unite our voice and really work together for a united Micronesia, united Pacific. It’s really important that our youth stay connected to the culture, and when we have spaces like this, celebrations like this, come on out. Join, celebrate together, build relationships, form friendship. That’s diplomacy and that’s solidarity. That’s unity in the Pacific.”
