Jigz Barber Shop & Beauty Salon has some of the island’s most experienced and highly skilled hairstylists.
JIGZ Barber Shop & Beauty Salon on Saturday celebrated its 15th year of providing the local community with quality services.
Despite ups and downs that reflected the island’s economic fortunes, Jigz, which started as a barber shop with two barbers servicing only male customers, now also serves female clients and offers more services, said its president, Jigg Hernando.
It was on Oct. 5, 2009, when she purchased a barber shop from a friend who had moved to Guam.
Hernando renamed the barber shop Jigz and retained its two barbers, Roger “Toto” Papa and Alma Anastacio.
After six months, they moved from the VS Sablan Building in Chalan Piao to what is now known as the CDA Building in San Jose, where their quality haircuts became known to local residents, including police officers and members of other law enforcement agencies.
After their lease was not renewed, a regular customer helped Hernando move to the ground floor of the MS Villagomez Commercial Building on Beach Road in Chalan Kanoa, where they have also expanded their services to cater to female customers as Jigz Barber Shop & Beauty Salon.
The manager, Daisy Gonzales, who has been Hernando’s long-time business partner, helped bring in more highly skilled hair stylists.
Today, Jigz has 11 employees, including two manicurists.
Like the other businesses on the island, Hernando said Jigz has been struggling since the Covid-19 pandemic when they had to shut down for six months.
Over the last couple of years, a lot of their customers have been moving to the U.S. mainland, Hernando said. But thanks to her barbers and beauticians and their high-quality services, Jigz remains afloat, she added.
Hernando said when former local customers who have moved to the U.S. visit Saipan, they often stop by Jigz and are pleased to see it still in business.
Hernando said despite all the struggles, there are still reasons to celebrate, which is why they are offering 30% to 35% discount on the following combo services:
