500 Sails will resume free swim programs on Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Guma Sakman. The programs are open for teens and adults of any swim level.
We are an island surrounded by the ocean, yet many do not know how to swim. Swimming can help us in so many ways. First, it is a healthy physical activity that is culturally part of our community as ocean people. Swimming can make us more aware of our surroundings and of the island’s natural beauty. Very importantly, knowing how to swim can help save a life.
The healthy activity of swimming works the whole body and teaches us how to breathe with movement. There is little to no impact so it is much easier on the joints compared to land activities. Also, as mentioned above, it is part of our cultural heritage that was documented in history; we were excellent swimmers and were compared to dolphins!
Since 500 Sails has used the lagoon instead of a pool, swimming offers more awareness of our surroundings. We swim but we also become more in tune with the environment. It is not just about embracing the water we swim in but also the wind, clouds, birds, sea critters and more.
Finally, learning how to swim could save you or your loved ones’ life. 500 Sails takes swimming seriously so swimming is also part of its sailing programs.
What are the programs?
Sirena on Saturdays for teenage and adult ladies. Gamsun Project on Mondays for middle and high school students and others who want to pursue a lifeguard certification course. Adult Learn to Swim is for adults of any swim level.
