(DRT) — The Division of Revenue and Taxation would like to inform taxpayers of the current status and expected timelines for their 2023 tax refunds. As of September 2024, the majority of tax refunds have been processed, but some are still pending.
“This update primarily affects individuals who filed their 2023 tax returns. About 1,600 returns are being processed weekly,” said Daniel T. Alvarez, DRT director. He said these are mostly returns categorized as complex returns.
The processed returns for 2023 are as follows: Refunds: $8,912,346.49; Child Tax Credit: $9,509,548.18; American Opportunity Tax Credit or AOTC: $365,110.91; Earned Income Tax Credit: $21,930,270.64
Simple returns are easier to process and are issued on a weekly basis. However, for those with multiple sources of income, includes certain schedules and other refunds such as AOTC or more complex returns with additional schedules, these types require additional review and processing time. DRT estimates these complex returns will be fully completed by Dec. 13.
Taxpayers are encouraged to check their refund status by calling (670) 664-1040. Errors in filing are the number one reason in refund delays. DRT continues to work through refund processing and is committed to issuing refunds as quickly as possible.
