Saipan participates in International Coastal Cleanup

LOCAL businesses and island residents participated in the International Coastal Cleanup on Saturday, Sept. 21.

According to Ocean Conservancy, the environmental advocacy organization that created the ICC, the goal of the worldwide challenge is to “remove trash from the world’s beaches and waterways.”

Locally, ICC efforts are coordinated with the Bureau of Environmental Coastal Quality.

BECQ, through the ICC, also collects the data regarding the kinds of trash found in local beach areas.

This year, more than 40 beachside and roadside locations were targeted for cleanup activities.

According to the official ICC website, the data recorded during the cleanup will go to an international solid waste management database.

The data collected helps local and international scientists make informed determinations about how plastic and other litter travels.
