HSEM: Expect strong winds today

THE Marianas will likely see stronger winds today, Tuesday, according to the CNMI Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

HSEM Public Information Officer Bernard Villagomez said they are closely monitoring a developing tropical disturbance identified by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center as Invest 95W.

The National Weather Service on Guam said Invest 95W will pass through the region near or over Guam as a tropical depression, sometime Tuesday afternoon to Tuesday night.

But “no tropical storm or typhoon watches or warnings are issued for the CNMI,” Villagomez said.

He said “it is nearly certain that Invest 95W will not be a typhoon when it passes through the Marianas. Nor will it be a tropical storm, at this point. [However], the CNMI will likely see stronger winds with the passage of this system.”

He added, “A flood watch is in effect for 4 to 8 inches of rain. This is likely to be a multi-day rain event with possible moderate to heavy showers during the passage of Invest 95W through the Marianas, followed by a wet monsoon pattern for the last half of the week. Localized flooding is possible in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Flash flooding could also be possible in other areas.”

A small craft advisory is in effect for the CNMI, HSEM stated.

“Winds and seas are expected to become hazardous to small craft on the coastal waters as Invest 95W passes through the region.  HSEM recommends that the community take standard preparedness precautions to ensure the safety of their families and property.”

Preparedness tips

 • Stay informed. Monitor weather updates. Stay tuned to official sources such as the National Weather Service and the CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management’s State Warning Point for regular updates on Invest 95W’s development.

• Protect your home. Secure outdoor items. Remove or secure any outdoor tents, canopies, tarps, furniture, tools, or loose items and any objects that could be carried by strong gusty winds. Prepare to close and secure all doors and windows from potential rain. If you live in a flood-prone area, be aware of potential flooding.
