THE Oleai Cultural Events Center will span a 256,567-square-foot parcel of land in Susupe, with construction scheduled to start in early 2025, according to the Office of Planning and Development.
The project will break ground across from Marianas High School, and is funded by a grant from the Economic Development Administration.
It is a two-part project that includes the construction of a sports complex and the event center, with a total budget of $21.6 million, OPD said.
The event center portion of the project will include the construction of a 1,500-square-foot main pavilion; up to nine medium-sized kiosks approximately 720 sq. feet each; up to 44 smaller kiosks approximately 162 sq. feet; an amphitheater stage with rear storage area and dressing rooms; paved parking; up to three restrooms; landscaping and outdoor enhancements such as lighting, sidewalks and benches; and the installation of necessary utilities and infrastructure to support the site.
OPD said when construction is complete, the event center will serve as the “premier venue for community events throughout the year.”
In a media release, OPD said the center will “provide a dedicated space for CNMI’s arts and culture-focused entrepreneurs to flourish. This initiative reflects a collaborative effort among EDA, local stakeholders, and the broader community, all working together to bring these projects to fruition. The intended outcome from this grant funding is to construct facilities that generate new employment that stimulate sustainable commercial growth for the CNMI.”
OPD said the project will align with the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals:
–SDG #3: Good Health and Well-Being.
–SDG #8: Decent Work and Economic Growth.
–SDG #9: Industry Innovation and Infrastructure.
–SDG #11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.
–SDG #13: Climate Action.
–SDG #15: Life on Land.
–SDG #17: Partnerships for the Goals.
OPD said the project will “equip the CNMI with the facilities needed to promote sports and cultural tourism, enhancing socio-economic sustainability and reinforcing cultural identity.”
