Youth invited to upcoming talaya clinic

TALAYA Club founder David Cabrera invites the youth to participate in a no-cost talaya clinic on Aug. 17, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Micro Beach.

Cabrera said water, lunch, and some snacks will be available for participants, who should be between the ages of 10 and 18. Space is limited. To register, go to https://shorturl.at/4NEBY

Cabrera said participants will learn talaya casting fundamentals and “gain valuable insights into responsible fishing.”

“Talaya Club is outside and wants to invite our youth to be outside with us, to experience meaningful growth that is rooted in cultural traditions and lived values,” Cabrera said.

He said the organization aims to perpetuate indigenous culture.

“Talaya Club puts a large focus on the aspect of our indigenous culture that knowledge is passed down from elder to youth in practice — with the talayas, eyes focused on the water, observing all the elements, and processing how they all work harmoniously.”

He also spoke about how this practice is sustainable.

“Using a talaya is the embodiment of targeted, sustainable fishing practice — to be proficient in the craft means you have to understand moon phases, tides, currents, and [seasonality] of food fish. That is how our ancestors did it and that is how Talaya Club teaches it today.”
