RUBY Ma, Saipan Humane Society’s director of clinical services, said two visiting veterinary technicians are on island to assist with animal care and train SHS staff.
Lacey Frame and Shahrzon Abdi are practicing veterinary technicians from California whose visit to Saipan is sponsored by the Banfield Foundation.
“They are here to assist us with our regular clinic, train us on different practical skills to enhance our service to the animals, and provide more in-depth information to pet owners,” Ma said.
Through its collaboration with SHS, the Banfield Foundation has been sponsoring animal care projects and the travel of veterinarians and veterinary technicians to the CNMI.
Saipan, which is home to thousands of dogs and cats, including stray ones, has no permanent resident veterinarian.
While on Saipan, Frame and Abdi are providing regular sick consultations, conducting skin tests, ultrasounds, among other services.
They are also training SHS staff on procedures including how to draw blood, insert IV catheters, handle animals, and dental cleaning.
Ma said SHS will be closed on Wednesday, July 17, but will be open on Thursday and Friday, July 18 and 19. Frame and Abdi will not be on Saipan next week, she added.
SHS operates by appointment. Make an appointment through saipanhumanesociety.org/.
The SHS clinic is located in Garapan on Angaha corner Alaihai streets, north of Caravan restaurant, and south of Kristo Rai Church.
