THE Crowne Plaza Northern Marianas Open 2024 doubles events kicked off Wednesday with all NMI teams eliminated by their respective opponents at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
The NMI’s Men’s Doubles teams went through tough matchups with all five pairs vanquished.
Against Chinese Taipei’s Chen Yu-Che and Yu Hsiang Chou, the NMI’s Sean Dizon and Andreau Galvez struggled to match their opponents’ tempo. The Chinese Taipei pair eventually overwhelmed the NMI duo in the first set, 21-6.
The NMI adjusted accordingly with a handful of offensive highlights to keep their opponents’ guard up. But they continued to fall behind due to unforced errors and overpowered returns, which allowed Chinese Taipei to secure the second set needed to win the match, 21-10.
The NMI’s Nathan Guerrero and Ezekiel Macario had a strong start against Japan’s Yuto Noda and Kota Ogawa, but struggled during executions. Japan won, 21-9, 21-2.
The NMI’s Sernantie Jimenez and Dave Odicta were eliminated by Japan’s Mahiro Kaneko and Shunya Ota, 21-2, 21-3 while the NMI’s Marlon Bautista and Paulo Quidato were outplayed by Korea’s Choi Pyeong Gang and Kim Byung Jae, 21-6, 21-5.
Also eliminated were the NMI’s Jomari Azura and Jordan Pangilinan, who were overpowered by Chinese Taipei’s Chia Yen Lin and Tasi Fu Cheng, 21-6, 21-7.
The NMI like failed to reach the next round in the Mixed Doubles event.
The NMI’s Jomari Azura and Trizian Canoza were bested by Chinese Taipei’s Chan Yueh Lin and Hung Hsin En, 21-8, 21-7; the NMI’s Dave Odicta and Genelyn Lansangan were trounced by Japan’s Daisuke Sano and Sorano Yoshikawa, 21-1, 21-3; the NMI’s Sernantie Jimenez and Shaina Malonzo were routed by Chinese Taipei’s Ting Yen-Chen and Wang Yi Zhen, 21-4, 21-2; and the NMI’s Nathan Guerrero and Janelle Pangilinan were no match for Japan’s Yuichi Shimogami and Sayaka Hobara, 21-4, 21-3.
The NMI’s Women’s Doubles teams will see action today, Thursday, with Genelyn Lansangan and Janelle Pangilinan facing Thailand’s Tidapron Kleebyeesun and Nattamon Laisuan while the NMI’s Shaina Malonzo and Lina Tsukagoshi will go up against Japan’s Mizuki Otake and Miyu Takahashi.
