Vehicles pass by a construction site on Beach Road, Tuesday last week.
THERE should be more stringent traffic rules for road construction sites and school zones especially during rush hours, Department of Public Works Secretary Ray N. Yumul said.
He has already met with Department of Public Safety Acting Commissioner Anthony Macaranas to discuss the issue.
Yumul said they agree that legislation should be introduced to double the fine imposed on traffic violators at road construction sites and school zones.
He said since the start of the $19.7 million Beach Road improvement project, traffic violations have been committed by motorists at the construction sites.
He said these could lead to accidents that may result in serious harm and cause damage.
A tougher set of traffic rules for road construction sites could make motorists more cautious, Yumul said.
He said among the violations committed at road construction sites are driving into an excavated section of the road; speeding; driving through newly paved sections of the road; not following traffic signs; and deliberately running over traffic cones.
Yumul said he and Macaranas plan to meet with lawmakers to propose amendments to traffic rules.
