Tania Tan in action during a University of Hawai’i’s cross country race in 2023.
TANIA Tan set a new NMI and personal record or PR in the 10,000m distance by clocking 36:48:49 in the Bryan Clay Invitational 2024 at the Azusa Pacific University in California over the weekend.
“The weather was great — not windy, but cloudy with cool temperatures,” Tan said. “I would say it was the perfect condition for distance running.”
Tan also made it to the Big West top 10 marks along with other Hawai’i women’s track & field team members.
“I feel happy to have broken my own NMI record,” she said. “I went into the race hoping for a PR and I’m glad I got to set a new PR but also a new NMI record!”
She believes that consistency over the years has helped her improve as a runner. “All those miles I’ve ran have built up and given me confidence to set a new PR,” she added.
Tan, who won two gold medals in the 2023 Pacific Games, has two more races to run in the NCAA college season, including at the Oregon State University and the Big West Outdoor Track Championships in about two weeks.
Then in June, she will compete in the Oceania Area Championships and the Micro Games.
“I’m super excited to represent the NMI,” Tan said. “Thank you to Northern Marianas Athletics for giving me this opportunity once again. It’s always an honor.”
A student in the masters communication program of the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa, Tan obtained her undergraduate degree from Fordham University in New York in 2023.
