GOVERNOR Arnold I. Palacios sent Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen a letter expressing solidarity and offering support following a 7.4 magnitude earthquake that shook the island nation on Wednesday.
“It is with a heavy heart that we have received news of the devastating earthquake that struck the eastern side of Taiwan on the morning of April 3, 2024,” the governor said.
He said the CNMI extends its deepest sympathies to all those affected by the tragic event, which has caused loss of lives, injuries to hundreds, and significant disruption to daily life in and around Hualien.
The governor said the images and reports emerging from the affected areas are deeply saddening.
“It is particularly distressing to learn of the casualties, the injured, and those trapped due to the collapse of structures and damage to infrastructure. Our thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones, those who are injured, and the brave individuals participating in rescue operations,” he said.
He added that the CNMI stands in solidarity with Taiwan during this challenging time.
“We are moved by the resilience and strength shown by the people and the government of Taiwan in responding to this disaster. Please know that our community is ready to assist in any way possible to support the recovery and rebuilding efforts,” the governor said.
He also acknowledges and appreciates the global community’s response, including expressions of support and offers of assistance from various countries.
He said in this spirit of international cooperation and friendship, the CNMI wishes to be part of the concerted effort to support Taiwan in its time of need.
“Please do not hesitate to inform us how we can be of assistance. Our prayers and thoughts remain with you, and we hope for a swift and robust recovery for all affected by this disaster,” the governor told the Taiwanese president.
