Education Commissioner Lawrence Camacho, Ed.D., speaks during the Saipan Chamber of Commerce meeting at Crowne Plaza Resort on Wednesday, April 3.

COMMISSIONER of Education Dr. Lawrence Camacho said the Public School System will hold a strategic planning institute in June to help guide PSS in the next five years.

Camacho, who was the special guest of the Saipan Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, said when he accepted the commissioner’s job in January, he informed the Board of Education that he would use his first 90 to 100 days to conduct research.

“I explained to the board that I need at least three months…to listen, to understand the environment, to collect data” about PSS, he said.

Camacho said he has already met education stakeholders, visited schools and made several observations.

“It enabled me to take notes and get really good at understanding the environment,” he added. “When we go to the institute in June, we will…look at [the] information and data to drive the strategic planning and also the new fresh data that we’ve gathered.”

He said PSS needs a new strategic plan, which the planning institute will attempt to create.

Camacho said he will also seek the input of the public as well as the mayors of Saipan, Tinian and Rota.
