DRT warns of Facebook account scams

HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — The Department of Revenue and Taxation has made the community aware that Facebook accounts purporting to be affiliated with the government agency are fake and warned the community not to fall victim to related scams.

In a press release on Friday, DRT said that two Facebook accounts which claim to provide online services for “Guam DMV” are scams.

“The said accounts, has made several posts advertising false servicing opportunities for a fee,” the department said in the release.

The warning came with a screenshot of an online advertisement from the fraudulent Facebook account, which included a picture of a Guam driver’s license and the following caption:

“Hello, are you too busy to get your license established? … Have you been going for the exam but can’t pass or are you not up to standards? … We are here to help you get your driver’s license without any difficulty,” the fake account stated on a Facebook post.

The scam calls for individuals to contact a telephone number with an 817 area code.

“The DRT warns the public that this is a scam being facilitated through these fake Facebook Accounts. DRT does not approve and has not authorized the facilitation of such services,” the department said in the release.

The only online services authorized by Rev & Tax are on the agency’s website, guamtax.com. Those services include scheduling a driver’s license or Guam ID appointment and performing an online renewal or replacement.

“In this regard, the public is strongly advised not to respond to these fake posts or provide any personal information to the fake accounts. Members of the public are encouraged to report anyone who contacts them through the fake Facebook accounts to 671-635-1840,” the department said in the release.
