Complaint: Alleged drunk driver offered $300 bribe to Port police

HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — A man allegedly offered $300 to authorities after he was arrested during a traffic stop.

On Sunday, Port Authority of Guam police officers conducted a traffic stop on Route 1 in Piti after a white Toyota Tacoma was seen “straddling … both the inner and outer lane for approximately 500 feet.” P.J. Paul, 32, was subsequently identified as the driver and was pulled over by the Port police, according to a magistrate’s complaint filed in the Superior Court of Guam.

Paul had bloodshot, watery eyes and smelled of alcohol, court documents stated. When asked if he consumed anything that would impair his driving, Paul allegedly said no.

“The officers then observed four green empty Heineken bottles. When the officers asked if he consumed any Heineken, the defendant said he consumed two beers,” according to the complaint.

After failing a sobriety test and refusing a Breathalyzer test, Paul was taken to the Guam Police Department’s central precinct in Sinajana. During transport, Paul allegedly bribed Port officers to let him go.

“Brothers, please help me. I can pay. I can pay $300 to let me go home,” the complaint stated, adding police told the suspect that it was inappropriate to bribe officers with money.

“Please brothers, help me,” Paul allegedly replied.

A little more than an hour after being pulled over, Paul was taken to the Department of Corrections and allegedly said, “Brothers, please help me I can pay $300,” according to the complaint.

Paul was charged with giving bribes as a third-degree felony and driving while impaired as a misdemeanor.

Paul was detained at DOC on $1,000 cash bail Tuesday afternoon.
