7 suffer minor injuries in suburban train collision

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Two trains collided in the southern city of Melbourne early Tuesday, slightly injuring one of the engineers and six passengers, emergency workers said.

The workers said it was a miracle no one was killed in the collision between two commuter trains about half mile south of a suburban station around 9:30 a.m. (2330 GMT). One was carrying passengers into Melbourne and the other was empty.

The engineer of one the trains was taken to a nearby hospital with back and shoulder injuries while about six passengers were treated at the scene for minor injuries. The other engineer escaped injury.

“We’re very, very lucky not to have significant injuries or multiple injuries out of this incident,” said Ian Clark, an ambulance spokesman.

A spokesman for the train company Connex said that four cars were damaged in the accident but its cause was still unknown.

“We’re holding an internal board of inquiry into the cause of the accident and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau will also conduct an independent investigation,” said the spokesman, who declined to be named.

A witness told Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio it appeared that at least one car had derailed.
