OPM may cut Hofschneider’s salary

THE Office of Personnel Management will impose the statutory ceiling on the salary of Health Secretary James U. Hofschneider if the Legislature fails to approve his annual compensation which exceeds the pay cap.

Personnel Director Juan I. Tenorio told Variety that the Attorney General’s Office had asked him to “initiate action” to reduce Hofschneider’s more than $140,000 annual salary to $80,000 as mandated by Public Law 9-25.

“If they are not going to sanction it, we would initiate the action to reflect the mandate of the salary cap. We have to cut his salary to $80,000 as mandated by law,” Tenorio said.

Hofschneider, in a separate interview, said the issue on his salary had already been addressed.

During a hearing on his nomination as health secretary, Hofschneider said he would still perform his duties as a certified physician at the Commonwealth Health Center.

He said the Senate agreed that he would continue to receive his existing salary of $140,000 a year.

Tenorio, however, said his office had not seen nor received a request for personnel action from the Office of the Governor.
