Filipino community holds fiesta on Sunday

THE Filipino community and the Philippine Consulate General will host the “Pistang Filipino” this weekend as part of the activities marking the 104th anniversary of Philippine Independence Day on June 12.

“We’ve lined up lots of activities to commemorate the forthcoming occasion. We’re happy that various groups have joined. Many individuals and organizations work closely with the consulate for this event,” Philippine Consul General Julia C. Heidemann said in an interview.

The Pistang Filipino will be held on Sunday, June 9, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. behind the Nauru Building in Susupe.

There will be about 20 booths and food stalls offering Filipino cuisine and low-priced Philippine products.

“We invite the public to come and participate in our celebration,” Heidemann said.

Fun games, raffle draws, a variety show featuring bands, singers, cultural dancers will be held in the day-long celebration.

A 9 a.m. Mass will also be held at Mt. Carmel Church in Chalan Kanoa on Sunday.

On Saturday, June 8, the consulate general will hold its migrant workers awarding ceremony at 6 p.m. at the Hibiscus Hall of Dai-Ichi Hotel in Garapan.

Ten outstanding overseas Filipino workers will be given awards during the ceremony. They are Nestor A. Alegre—Variety’s comptroller—project engineer Edgardo O. Reyes, staff nurse Jergin E. Crabano, executive manager Genaro F. Fajilan, artist and pageant director Ernesto C. Molina, head waitress Leonor R. Bernardo, production superintendent Ernesto N. Lineses, mason Elmer C. Icatlo, maintenance staff Dionicio F. Fabula and security supervisor Rodolfo M. Francisco.

On Wednesday, June 12, Filipinos will gather at 7 a.m. for a flag-raising ceremony at Nauru Building. It will be followed by a community breakfast at the building lobby.

At 12 noon, a vin d’ honneur will be held at Aqua Resort Club. CNMI government officials, business and community leaders are expected to the attend this gathering.

This year’s independence anniversary theme is “Bayan Ko, Sagot Ko!” (“My Nation, My Responsibility!”)
