Keke writes to PM over alleged massacre

HONIARA (Pacnews) — Solomon Islands Prime Minister Allan Kemakeza has received a letter from militant leader Harold Keke concerning the alleged massacre of 11 men on the Weathercoast of Guadalcanal about a fortnight ago, Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corp. reports.

Speaking from Weathercoast, Keke’s private secretary Onesmus Tovoa said the recipients were advised in the letter on what should be done to clear the issue. (See story on page 27)

He says the letter also contained the names of people alleged to have masterminded the operation in which the 11 men, who were on an unknown mission, disappeared. There have been rumors that the group were sent to capture Keke, who has so far refused to take part in the Solomon Islands peace process.

Tovoa says the people on the mission were promised SI$3,000 ($433) each to capture Keke.

He says the people involved were interrogated to get information on who had sent them and what their mission was.

Tovoa says the group was armed with nine high-powered weapons and communication units, which were destroyed in the incident.
