SOON, fishermen and farmers who sell their produce along Beach Road, on sidewalks or through knocking on dog-guarded houses will be in a better place.
Rep. Arnold I. Palacios, R-Saipan, recently announced that funds have been appropriated for the design and construction of a Saipan public market that will be located at the fishing base in Garapan across the Kristo Rai Church.
This was after Gov. Juan N. Babauta signed into law Palacios’s H.B. 13-92 which sought a $500,000 appropriation for the public market.
The measure, which is now P.L. 13-10, was co-sponsored by House Speaker Heinz S. Hofschneider, R-Saipan, House Floor Leader Jesus T. Attao, R-Saipan, Reps. Stanley T. Torres, R-Saipan, and Ramon A. Tebuteb, R-Saipan.
Palacios said the public market is a part of the larger Garapan Fishing Revitalization Project which includes upgrading the existing dock and small boat launching ramp, adding a small boat marina and an adjacent park with recreational facilities, a culture center and other amenities for the Garapan community.
