PORT MORESBY (Papua New Guinea Post-Courier/PINA) — The Papua New Guinea Eco-Forestry Forum launched a magazine for school age children to coincide with World Environment Day.
The magazine, Echoes from the Forests, has been designed as an activity or workbook.
It is filled with information on the importance of forests and what is happening to them. It also includes suggestions on what school children can do to help protect the forests.
The Forum, a non-government organization involved in promoting sustainable forest uses, and partner NGOs have taken this initiative to help educate the school-aged population about:
– the state of forest management in the country;
– and what good measures they can take to safeguard the forests for their benefit.
The magazine also focuses on what non-government organizations, community groups, resource owners, individuals and international NGOs are doing to help grassroots Papua New Guineans better manage their resources.
It looks at how to protect these against unsustainable logging practices.
The magazine covers topics such as:
– Papua New Guinea forests,
– forests around the world,
– why forests are important
– the issues of large-scale and illegal logging.
It also contains activities for children such as poems, crosswords, puzzles, quizzes and word searches.
The magazine was printed in Port Moresby and was distributed to 10 provinces ahead of World Environment Day, through NGO networks, community groups and individuals.
The magazine is part of an ongoing media awareness program by the Forum.
