Substance abuse opens new office in Koror jail

KOROR (Palau Horizon) — Through the joint efforts of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Justice, a new Office of Substance Abuse Programs has been opened at the Koror Jail.

The new facility will provide full time counseling to prisoners who have substance abuse problems or have been ordered by the Palau Supreme Court to undergo a substance abuse program. This new office will greatly reduce the time and costs involved in transporting prisoners outside the jail. It will also lead to the development of more comprehensive programs for the future.

Studies conducted in Palau suggest that 90 percent of all violent crimes are caused by persons under the influence of alcohol.
