Turpentine, meth, coconut juice—a deadly cocktail

PORT MORESBY (Papua New Guinea Post-Courier/PINA) — Two men are dead and nine others are fighting for their lives in Daru General Hospital, Papua New Guinea, after drinking methylated spirit mixed with turpentine and coconut juice.

Daru General Hospital’s chief executive, Dr. John Konga, said the 11 men—one in his early 30s and the rest in their 20s—mixed the deadly drink at a party on Saturday evening.

Around midnight they were all rushed to the hospital vomiting blood. Many of them were already unconscious upon arrival at the hospital.

Konga said the turpentine container from which the substance was taken–-brought to the hospital–-clearly had the words “Poison–not to be consumed” written on it. The men are all from Kiwai Island near Daru.
