Tinian classrooms termite-ridden

SEVERAL classrooms and at least one building at Tinian Elementary School have to be demolished because of problems with termites, according to Board of Education Chairman Herman Guerrero.

Guerrero said that during his visit to Tinian late last month, he found that the campus was having problems with termites.

“There are termite-ridden classrooms in the elementary level. There’s also a building that has to be knocked down because it’s unsafe for use. It has to be replaced,” Guerrero said, adding that funding for the projects had already been identified. Guerrero expressed hope that the project would be completed in time for the opening of classes in August.

There are 393 students enrolled in the only public elementary school on Tinian which has about 32 classrooms and 18 teachers.

Tinian Junior and High Schools have 20 teachers and a combined enrollment rate of 297 for school year 2001-2002.

The number of high school students on the island rose by 18.79 percent to 177 from 149 students.
