Younis is one of Guam’s outstanding women

HAGATñA — Guam Variety’s general manager was named one of the island’s eight outstanding women of the year.

Laila C. Younis received the Outstanding Woman of the Year award for the non-traditional role category.

Hosted by the Bureau of Women’s Affairs, the annual event was held at the Holiday Inn Resort.

Over 40 nominations were submitted. Eight were selected as Guam’s Outstanding Women of the Year in their respective categories.

This year’s theme was “Women Sustaining the American Spirit.”

The women nominated hailed from all sectors of the island community—from the private, local and federal government workforces, community and volunteer organizations, schools and homes.

A panel of nine judges evaluated the nominees. The accounting firm of J. Scott Magliari & Company Certified Public Accountant tabulated the results.

Besides Younis, the other awardees are Karen Carpenter in the volunteer category; Beatrix Poh, a student; Hyun Jung Choy, mother; Isabel Q. Taitano, grandmother; Joann Marie Sullivan, private sector; Ann Hardin, community; and Grace O. Garces, GovGuam/federal government.
