THE biggest pumpkins, the healthiest bulls and cows, the finest betel nuts and all other locally grown and bred fruits, vegetables and animals will take center stage at the 23rd Annual Saipan Agricultural Fair on May 25.
This early, the Department of Lands and Natural Resources and the Saipan Agricultural Fair Association are already preparing for the event.
Marianne C. Teregeyo, DLNR special assistant for correspondence, says they expect more than a thousand visitors, farmers and ranchers to participate in the event, which will include live farm animals and fruit and vegetable displays.
The one-day fair, to be held at the 4-H Pavilion in Susupe from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., will be highlighted by competitions involving various animals, vegetables and fruits.
“We encourage parents to bring in their kids to the fair, for them to see live farm animals, instead of just reading about them in books,” said Teregeyo.
The Sabalu Market vendors will also join the agricultural fair.
Every year, local farmers display their best and finest betel nuts, bananas, breadfruits, pumpkins, mangoes, tangerines, guavas, papayas, watermelons, cabbages, eggplants, malungai beans and tips, pepper, radishes, squash, sweet potatoes, taro, yam and tomatoes. Ranchers also showcase their best and healthiest bulls, cows, ducks, rabbits, geese, ducks, chicken broilers and chicken ornamentals.
Cooked food, raw fruits and vegetables, clothes, house wares and other souvenir items will be sold at the event.
Teregeyo said business establishments and the Commonwealth Development Authority, which is a regular contributor to the event, are once again donating prizes for this year’s competition winners.
