Babauta says no to manual processing of rebate checks

THE administration says any request for the manual processing of rebate and refund checks will be turned down to avoid delays in issuing these checks to CNMI taxpayers and to ensure accountability.

Gov. Juan N. Babauta said it is his administration’s goal to process all refund and rebate checks through the automated tax system.

“Deviating from the automated system by allowing manual processing of refund and/or rebate checks has created problems in accountability and delays in automated batch processing,” the governor said.

The Division of Revenue and Taxation is already processing the annual corporate and individual returns for tax year 2001, Babauta said in a memorandum to department and agency heads.

The division is devoting the majority of its resources to ensure that all the information returns, including the W-2s, W-2Gs and 1099s forms and all the tax returns, are entered on time “to meet the statutory deadlines” of issuing refunds and rebate checks, Babauta said.

“Accordingly, the Division of Revenue and Taxation will not entertain any request for manual processing of refund and/or rebate checks,” Babauta said.

The government has until May 1 to distribute the refund checks for corporate filers, and until June 1 for individual filers. For rebates, the government has until Sept. 15 to distribute for corporate filers, and until Oct. 15 for individual filers.
