KOROR (Palau Horizon) — Palau obtained $138,700 in technical assistance grant from the U.S. Department of the Interior for a local project that would digitize data on national statutes, court cases and other legal information.
President Tommy Remengesau secured the funds during his recent state visit to Washington, D.C. The project will cost about $257,000. Palau will provide $118,300.
The project will allow the public to access legal documents and information through the Internet.
The funds will be used for the purchase of local digitized data and duplex copier/printer.
It will also cover software royalties and other related consultant fees.
The system, Remengesau said, is projected to be self-sufficient by the third year of its operation.
The project will function on funds obtained from the sale of printed materials, computer disks and Web site access fees.
The government submitted the grant request on Feb. 28 and the Interior Department immediately accepted it.
