Manglona: Senate working to revive economy

THE Senate is assuring the public that it is helping revitalize the economy through legislative actions.

In an interview, Senate President Paul A. Manglona, R-Rota, said several measures had been introduced by senators to improve revenue generation.

“For example, I have introduced a bill that would allow the government to use up to 10 percent of funds available from capital improvement projects for technical services that would help complete CIPs worth over $100,000,” he said.

“Infrastructure development will definitely have a multiplier effect that could help the economy,” he added.

The Senate is also working closely with the Strategic Economic Development Council and the administration in developing and promoting a tourism package that would help boost the economy, Manglona said.

He introduced, moreover, a bill that seeks to establish a media and video office. The establishment of a successful film and video promotional program “would help improve the economic conditions of the CNMI,” Manglona said.

Another measure introduced by Sen. Jose M. Dela Cruz, D-Tinian, would lead to an open door policy for new foreign investments.

“There have already been many bills introduced in the Senate for the economy. And we are assuring the public that we will pass these measures. We are doing everything we can to realize this aim,” he said.

Manglona said it is also important that the Legislature and the administration maintain a good working relationship.

“It cannot be worked out by just one House or the administration alone. In order for the CNMI government to get over this hurdle, stimulate the economy and address pressing issues, we need to have a good working relationship,” he said.
