Japan accuses NZ of hypocrisy

SHIMONOSHEKI (Pacnews) — Japan is targeting New Zealand, in its bid to win a resumption of commercial whaling.

Thousands of pamphlets criticizing New Zealand’s stance have been distributed at the International Whaling Commission meeting in the Japanese port of Shimonoseki.

The commission is also set to debate an Australian proposal for a South Pacific whale sanctuary.

Reports from the whaling port town of Shimonosheki said a plan by Japan to introduce secret ballots at the commission meeting was defeated.

Japan had argued the proposal would shield small countries from undue pressure, but several nations including Australia said it would’ve reduced transparency.
