Fiji president arrives tomorrow

FIJI President Josefa Iloilo is scheduled to arrive on Saipan tomorrow afternoon for a five-day visit.

The president will be accompanied by First Lady Salaseini Kavu and six other members of the delegation including permanent secretary Dr. N.C. Goneyali.

The delegation will arrive at 2:55 p.m. from Narita, Japan.

Iloilo was invited by local Christian organizations that will hold the 3rd annual National Day of Prayer this week.

The event will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Friday at Hopwood Junior High School.

“We’re extremely grateful that the president willingly granted our request to be our guest speaker,” Cliff Shoemake of New Covenant Life Church in Dandan said in an interview.

Shoemake flew to Fiji recently to personally invite the president for the event.

Shoemake said Iloilo was uniquely qualified to speak on subjects such as transformation and leadership in view of “recent developments” in Fiji.

Under Iloilo’s leadership, Fiji has begun to recover from the May 2000 coup which deposed its first ethnic Indian prime minister.

On Friday morning, Fiji’s first couple will attend the leaders meeting at the Hibiscus Room of Dai-Ichi Hotel.

This meeting will be attended by government, business and community leaders.
