KEY issues ranging from economy to tourism, and security to labor matters will be tackled in the first ever CNMI Consuls General Conference on June 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The participating consuls general held a pre-conference meeting last week. They agreed to call the annual gathering a “conference” and not a “summit.”
The theme for this year’s conference is “Enhancing Ties Between the CNMI and the Consular Corps.”
The consuls general and their staff will meet with administration officials today to discuss the details of the June 1 conference.
Gov. Juan N. Babauta will talk about the economy and tourism. Visiting Philippine ambassador to the U.S., Robert del Rosario, will tackle consular issues, while Washington Rep. Pete A. Tenorio will discuss the issues on “stateless” persons, the establishment of a U.S. passport processing office and the authorization to board requirement.
Besides the Philippines, Japan, Palau, the Federated States of Micronesia, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand and Germany are expected to be represented in the conference.
The envoys will “identify areas for cooperation” between the CNMI and their nations on issues concerning the economy, tourism and security.
