Public Health, Rotary Club laud Schwarz

THE Department of Public Health and the Rotary Club of Saipan honored Susan P. Schwarz for her outstanding community service as president of the CHC Volunteers for 15 consecutive years.

Schwarz is set to leave Saipan for the U.S.

The 53-year-old Schwarz is a former active volunteer at Guam Memorial Hospital and was one of the founding members of the CHC Volunteers in 1986.

She served as the president of the group from 1986 to 2001.

Health Secretary James U. Hofschneider yesterday said Schwarz is a “major force” in the CHC Volunteers, a civic group that donates medical supplies and equipment to the Commonwealth Health Center.

The total donations of the CHC Volunteers had already surpassed the $1 million mark, Hofschneider said.

This could not have been achieved without widespread support from businesses and individuals, he said.

Schwarz yesterday accepted a certificate of achievement from the Rotary Club for her “superior achievements and excellence in ongoing, unrelenting, dedicated service to the community with the CHC Volunteers Organization.”

Schwarz, in her brief remarks during the Rotary Club meeting, expressed her sincerest appreciation to all the individuals and businesses that helped her and the CHC Volunteers fulfill their mission.

Aside from Hofschneider, current CHC Volunteers President Kim Prinz and former Lands and Natural Resources Secretary Maggie DLG. Wonnenberg also talked about Schwarz’s outstanding contributions to the community.

“She has shared her life with this community. This is her home,” Wonnenberg said.

Hofschneider enumerated CHC Volunteers’ various contributions to the government hospital, from a mammogram machine to wheel chairs, hospital gowns and colonoscopes.

The CHC Volunteers, under Schwarz’s leadership, also helped subsidize the cost of pulmo-aide mechanical nebulizers to help provide essential medication to asthmatic children.

Former Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton sent congratulatory messages to Schwarz in 1990 and 1995 for being a President’s Volunteer Action Award nominee during those years.

The Saipan Chamber of Commerce also presented Schwarz its “humanitarian award” in April for her many years of volunteer service.
