FAA inspecting Saipan airport

SAIPAN International Airport will be inspected by the Federal Aviation Administration to ensure that it is safe from any security threats.

Ron Simpson, the FAA airport chief who is currently on island, is scheduled to meet with local airport and port authorities this week to discuss protection and security issues.

“I’ll be here up to Thursday,” Simpson said.

CPA board member Ray Cing said Saipan’s airport “has always been safe for travelers.”

“Our airport is safe as ever. There’s no cause for alarm because we are on top of things,” Cing said.

Travelers, he said, can feel secure with the fact that airport authorities have implemented tight security procedures.

“We go through the whole process to secure our ports facilities,” the former labor and immigration secretary said.

Cing said Simpson’s visit is a regular one.

“He’s been coming here more often after Sept. 11,” he said.

In other news, Saipan airport team bagged more awards than its counterpart on Guam in the recently concluded Saipan-Guam Airport Olympics.

“CPA has more but it’s all right. It’s our Olympics. We’re supposed to enjoy it and we did,” said Gerard Bautista, operations superintendent of Guam’s airport.

Over 250 personnel from the airports participated in the weekend sports event held at the Ada Gym and at Pacific Islands Club.
