Navy sailor arrested in fatal November crash

HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — A 21-year-old man was arrested in connection to a fatal crash the day after Thanksgiving.

On Nov. 24, 2023, an accident on Route 1 by Chalan La Chance in Yigo resulted in the death of a 62-year-old and prompted a Guam Police Department investigation.

According to a GPD press release issued Friday, the investigation resulted in the arrest of Chandler Adams, 21, who was interviewed Friday before he was arrested at about 9:40 a.m.

Adams, who was driving a Nissan 370Z, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide, reckless driving with injuries, expired registration, no insurance with damages greater than $5,000 as a result of a crash, speeding and other offenses.

Adams has since been processed, booked and confined at the Department of Corrections.

GPD spokesperson Officer Berlyn Savella confirmed Adams is a member of the U.S. Navy.

Crash

Around the time of the crash, police reported Adams’ vehicle was traveling northbound on Route 1 toward Andersen Air Force Base when a Toyota Sienna van exited from Chalan La Chance and onto Route 1 before it collided with the Nissan, Post files state.

The driver of the Sienna was Irene Jean Santos, a 62-year-old woman who had five kids in her vehicle. Following the crash, Santos and the five minors were transported to Guam Memorial Hospital for treatment, however, Santos succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead by attending physicians.
