Guam resident awarded $2.75M in landmark case

ATTORNEYS Victorino DLG Torres and Matthew Holley, representing Juanita Arceo, a resident of Guam from Ordot village, recently celebrated a momentous victory in the Superior Court of Guam, as she finally received her long-awaited day in court and was awarded $751,000 for economic damages, $1,000,000 for physical impairment, $750,000 for pain and suffering, $125,000 for loss of enjoyment of life and $150,000 for inconvenience for a total of $2,751,000 in a landmark case. This success comes after an arduous legal journey of over three years since Arceo was injured.

The case — Juanita Reyes Arceo v. Cost-U-Less Guam, CV 0397-20 — was known for its complexity and challenges and required many expert witnesses to testify most of whom are from the U.S. mainland.

The trial judge was Elyze M. Iriarte. The jury trial was held from Dec. 11 to 19, 2023, and the jurors started their deliberation on Dec. 20, 2023. The defense attorneys were Geri Diaz and Siyan “Margaret” Su of Camacho Calvo Law Group LLC.

Arceo and her attorneys would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the honorable members of the jury for their hard work and dedication throughout the proceedings.

The plaintiff’s legal team also wishes to express their appreciation for the unwavering commitment and tireless efforts of the Guam judicial system. Guam’s efficient and expeditious legal process played a crucial role in bringing this case to a conclusion.

“It has been a long and challenging journey, and we are deeply thankful to the court and the dedicated members of the jury who worked diligently to ensure that justice prevailed,” said Victorino DLG Torres, lead counsel for Ms. Arceo.  “We are also fortunate to have a legal system in Guam that allows for a faster resolution of cases, ultimately benefiting our clients.”

Arceo’s attorneys, Torres and Matthew Holley, also practice with the Torres Brothers LLC in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
