Judge Camacho rejects defendant’s request to be returned to Corrections

In denying Zhang’s request, Judge Camacho told the defendant on Wednesday that Corrections “is not a homeless center, or a hotel.”

Zhang at the hearing appeared out of custody and was represented by Assistant Public Defender Vina Seelam, while Assistant Attorney General Steven Kessel appeared for the government. Brandon Doggett served as Zhang’s interpreter.

On Dec. 14, the parties filed a stipulation to modify Zhang’s bail and requested that the court reinstate the $3,000 bail and allow the defendant to surrender to the custody of Corrections.

The motion to modify bail was denied by Judge Camacho who also scheduled a bench trial for Jan. 6, 2021 at 9 a.m.

Zhang, who is unemployed, was charged by the AG’s office with vandalism and tampering with a vehicle.

Police said Zhang  spray-painted the hood of a police vehicle parked at the Department of Public Safety central office.

Zhang was arrested on Nov. 20, 2020.
