Anthony C. Torres
THE 10th Cycle Corrections Academy will begin on Feb. 25, 2024, Corrections Commissioner Anthony Torres told reporters on Monday.
“I’m looking for 25 of the Commonwealth finest young men and women to be part of this… academy,” he added.
“I’m going to be a part of this academy, whether one of the instructors, to go out there and see it through…. I’m excited about this academy because it’s an opportunity for jobs, an opportunity to build our staff and complement current correctional officers. And it’s an opportunity to be a part of training component,” Torres said, adding that his department will work with Northern Marianas College.
Currently, there are 110 Corrections officers.
“Ideally, I would like to have 150 total,” Torres said. “I would like to pick up 30-35 new corrections officer but due to budget constraints I’m okay with 25,” he added.
Today, Wednesday, Dec. 5, Torres will meet with Guam officials, including Corrections Director Fred Bordallo, at the Vicente Taman Seman Memorial Building in Susupe.
Torres said Guam “is facing inmate overcrowding issues, and we want to alleviate that overcrowding by housing them here — it’s also a way for us to generate revenue.”
The Guam and CNMI officials are expected to hold a press conference after their meeting.
