Fiji celebrates Music Day

SUVA (Oceania Flash) — Thousand have gathered at the weekend here in Fiji’s capital to celebrate the Fiji Music Day on the capital’s seafront.

The 12-hour non-stop show this year features Fiji’s top artists such as Seru Serevi, Saimone Vatalevu, the Black Rose band and numerous schools who had put together music, dance shows.

The event, which is organized yearly by the local cultural organization Alliance Française, also coincided this year with the official beginning of the “1 year to go” countdown ahead of the Pacific Games to be held in 2003 in the Fiji capital.

Guest stars this year for the musical show were New Caledonia’s Gurujele band, who came to perform for the first time in Fiji as part of a Pacific tour, including Tahiti.

Speaking during the show, Fiji-based French Ambassador Jean-Pierre Vidon stressed music, like sports, did not require any language and that Alliance—a global network of culture-promoting associations—was all about promoting culture and promote exchanges between various communities.

This year’s music day was also supported by the Fiji government’s national unity and reconciliation department.
