SENATOR David M. Cing is proposing amendments to a measure that would compensate hundreds of citizens whose lands were acquired by the government for public use.
The senator, in an interview yesterday, said H.B. 13-1 or the Land Compensation Act of 2002, has to be amended.
Introduced by House Floor Leader Jesus T. Attao, R-Saipan, the bill would authorize the Marianas Public Lands Authority to borrow $40 million through the Commonwealth Development Authority to promptly compensate landowners whose properties were acquired to build roads, ponding basins and other public infrastructure.
The $40 million fund would come from a portion of the liquid fuel tax and the entire aviation fuel tax revenues.
Cing, D-Tinian, said Edward Sanchez should be on the list of residents who would be compensated. He said Sanchez’s property was used by the government to secure a water reservoir for Tinian.
The senator also wants the Department of Finance to deduct any amount owed to the government by an individual “who agrees to accept monetary compensation as provided (in) the settlement of land compensation claims.”
