THE Commonwealth Ports Authority remains hopeful that the $20 million Tinian runway project would be completed by the end of August this year.
The project, which is handled by Telesource CNMI, began in Dec. 2001, but due to delays caused by environmental and engineering concerns, the completion date was rescheduled.
The project is 68 percent complete, CPA said.
“We still believe that we’d be able to meet the end of August deadline,” CPA Executive Director Carlos H. Salas said.
Recently, the contractor began excavation work of up to about 600 feet for a new taxiway design. This change in design was made upon the advice of the Federal Aviation Administration.
The FAA also approved changes in longitudinal and latitudinal slopes as well as in the sediment and erosion control mechanism.
CPA said a 30 degree, instead of a 90 degree, slope will be made in the taxiway area to ensure high speed aircraft movement.
