Letter to the Editor: Profile in courage

This is the story of eight United States senators who made courageous and unpopular decisions for the good of their party, state and country.  I, like many students during the 1960’s, was required to read this book, as I am sure many of the readers in the CNMI have.  It has had a lasting impact to me to this day, some 48 years later.

In 1989, the Kennedy family in cooperation with the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library, created the “Profile in Courage Award.”  It is now recognized as the nations’ most prestigious honor for elected public service.

During his career, President Kennedy inspired people to follow their conscience and to work for the benefit of their communities, and their country.  He believed that each person could make a difference and that everyone should try. In particular he encouraged elected officials to choose principles over partisanship, to do what is right, rather than what is expedient.

Our Washington Representative Pete A. is a glowing example of a Profile in Courage.  Pete A. did the right thing morally, and legally, for our commonwealth, by working with the U.S. Congress, the White House, and federal authorities on S.2739.

His position was unpopular with some.  He took some political and personal lumps, but he always did the right thing, kept his eye on the ball, and exhibited courageous leadership.  He has tremendous connections in Washington.  Everyone knows him.  He is professional and personable, and because of that, S.2739 has tremendous flexibility, that favors the CNMI!

His presence in Washington brings honor and respect to him and the CNMI.

I have written the nominating committee at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library, and have asked them to consider Washington Representative Pete A. Tenorio  for a “Profile In Courage Award.”  There is no one political figure on such a large scale in the CNMI, the Marianas, or in Asia Pacific, has demonstrated such political courage as Pete A.

I am NOT a Republican.  I have NO political party affiliation.  I am an independent voter and a war veteran, but I do recognize courage, and leadership.  Pete A has both! And those of us who call this home, are better for it!

Pete A. is a “Profile in Courage.”

God Bless America and May God Bless The CNMI.
