Justices, judges visit schools

Superior Court Judge Ramona V. Manglona of the Superior Court  was at  Mt. Carmel High School on Monday morning to speak with junior and senior students.

Yesterday, she was at  Marianas High School to meet with 9th to 12th grade students.

Manglona said their visits are part of the annual Law Day activities.

It was President Dwight Eisenhower who, in 1958, designated May 1, as Law Day.

Manglona said she talked about the importance of Law Day.

“When it was first proclaimed by President Eisenhower in 1958, there was a recognition of the need to ensure that the rule of law is recognized. All members of the community are expected to adhere to the law to ensure that we have equality, justice and peace,” Manglona said in an interview yesterday.

The judge also explained to the students how the legal system works in the CNMI, the structures of the judiciary, and why there are local and federal courts in the commonwealth.

Today, Justice John A. Manglona and law clerk Peter Yao will do a presentation at  Saipan International School, while Associate Judge David A. Wiseman is scheduled to talk with students of Hopwood Junior High School.

This annual “Judges in the Classroom” activity provides an opportunity for justices and judges to visit schools and engage students in discussions of law-related topics.

Chief Justice Miguel S. Demapan earlier spoke with the students of Marianas Baptist Academy about the Law Day celebration.

This year’s theme is: “Foundations for Communities of Opportunity and Equity.”
